Garibaldi Pineapple

quilt8
Another “Pineapple” quilt of the 1890’s, this one with diamond-in-a-square block centers. The red fabric is printed with black figures. The ability to print black on red came about the same time that Italy became united under Garibaldi, whose fighters wore red shirts. And so in general parlance, those red prints are called “Garibaldi’s”.
