This French boulle work clock, crafted sometime between 1650 and 1725, is from the workshop of Piquet of Renne. It is likely that the balloon case was made by a separate casemaker during the same time period. Boulle work, a type of marquetry involving patterned inlays of alternating bronze and tortoiseshell, is a predominantly French style of decoration that originated in the 17th century with cabinetmaker André Charles Boulle. The technique is on full display on this magnificently decorated clock.
