The Astle Alpaugh Family Foundation was saddened to hear of the passing of long-time friend John W. Kuhl, on March 3, 2026. John eagerly shared his knowledge and skills of presentation with the Foundation through our website showcase presentations. CLICK HERE for our interview with John.

In addition to his gifts in sharing knowledge through visual presentation, John was a passionate historian, researcher and collector of images and artifacts of the Civil War period. A lifelong Hunterdon County resident, he served for many years on the board of the Hunterdon County Historical Society and was also a trustee of the New Jersey Civil Heritage Association. John was a member and competitive shooter in the North-South Skirmish Association, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

John wrote and edited several publications throughout his life, sharing his passion for the historical significance of the Civil War.

John’s vast knowledge of American History, combined with his service and contributions to the local community, have enriched the lives of many throughout the years. The impact of his life’s work is left for us to treasure.
