This year’s showcase features greeting cards from the holiday season of 1928 and the first few months of 1929. That winter was a difficult one for Hazel Alpaugh Astle, who spent it in the hospital ill with appendicitis. Many of the personal wishes here contain longer notes, or come on one-sided cards that often came with the bouquets of flowers delivered to Hazel in the hospital.
This diverse collection of 90-year-old greeting cards varies from those personal notes to commercial holiday mailings sent to her home at 24 West Street. It even includes a birthday card, from Hazel’s Aunt Tilly, delivered to her hospital room in February 1929. It isn’t our most brightly colored or historically interesting collection, but it’s certainly our most personal and we are so grateful Hazel saved the holiday wishes she received during that winter season.
